ISLE OF SKYE
A visit to the Highlands is not complete unless it entails some of its many islands, including the Isle of Skye, located to the north of the Inner Hebrides, one of the largest islands in the Scottish territory and one of the most sought after by photography enthusiasts.

A visit to the Highlands is not complete unless it entails some of its many islands, including the Isle of Skye, located to the north of the Inner Hebrides, one of the largest islands in the Scottish territory and one of the most sought after by photography enthusiasts. The bridge that allowed for road access (route A87) between Kyle of Lochalsh with the beautiful Eilean Donan castle in the continental area, and Kyleakin, in the eastern area of the island, was inaugurated in 1995, and that has most certainly contributed to promoting tourist activity, which is fundamental for the survival of its inhabitants.
An excellent option to experience Skye is roaming south to Elgol. From Broadford onwards, the path is narrow, and the circulation allows only one vehicle at a time. However, the road is good, and there are many spots where the road widens and provides for the simultaneous crossing of cars, continually with great diplomacy and lightness.
In this part of the island, the landscape is quite rural, combining the tranquillity of the surrounding waters, the grandiosity of the mountains, and its inhabitants' warmth. Elgol is a small fishing village with several nooks and recesses with great photographic potential, which may justify a two or three-day stay. Do not forget to visit Loch Coruisk on a boat, sailing past a local seal colony in the heart of the Cuillin Mountains. The ship is controlled by a local fisherman named Seumas, the eldest working on the Isle of Skye (Misty Isle Boat Trips: http://www.mistyisleboattrips.co.uk/), who welcomes his passengers in his mysterious Gaelic Scottish idiom. If you’re lucky enough, you might catch a glimpse of sharks, whales and dolphins. The boat stops for half an hour so tourists can enjoy the mountain scenery and walk for a little while. Back on the ship, the friendly crew, composed of three generations of the same family, presents us with coffee, hot chocolate or juice with cookies or chocolates.

Uma visita minimamente completa às Highlands deve incluir algumas das suas muitas ilhas e a de Skye, situada a norte do arquipélago das Inner Hebrides, uma das maiores do território escocês, é das mais procuradas pelos amantes da arte fotográfica. Data de 1995 a inauguração da ponte que veio permitir o acesso rodoviário (pela estrada A87) entre as localidades de Kyle of Lochalsh com o seu belo castelo de Eilean Donan, no continente, e de Kyleakin, na zona leste da ilha, o que certamente terá contribuído para a promoção da actividade turística, que é fundamental para a sua subsistência.
Uma boa opção para conhecer Skye é seguir em direcção ao sul, até Elgol. A partir de Broadford a estrada é estreita e apenas permite a circulação de um veículo, mas está em boas condições e são muitos os pontos em que a via se alarga para que as viaturas se cruzem, o que é feito com grande diplomacia e ligeireza.
Nesta parte da ilha a paisagem é bastante rural, conjugando-se a tranquilidade das águas, a imponência das montanhas e a simpatia dos habitantes. Elgol é uma pequena aldeia piscatória com inúmeros recantos de interesse fotográfico, que justificariam uma estada de dois ou três dias. Não se esqueça de visitar o Loch Coruisk, passando ao largo de uma colónia de focas, no coração das Cuillin Mountains. O barco é pilotado por um pescador local, de nome Seumas, que é o mais antigo a operar na ilha de Skye (Misty Isle Boat Trips: http://www.mistyisleboattrips.co.uk/) e costuma fazer uma recepção de boas vindas na enigmática língua gaélica escocesa. Em dias de sorte, é possível avistar tubarões, baleias e golfinhos. A embarcação efectua uma paragem de meia hora para que os turistas possam apreciar a paisagem montanhosa e caminhar um pouco. De regresso ao barco, a simpática tripulação constituída por três gerações da mesma família oferece-nos café, chocolate quente ou sumos acompanhados de biscoitos ou chocolates.
